SCAN is LinkSat’s patented bandwidth management solution.  To use an analogy, SCAN is a fully automated traffic control system that controls and directs data traffic in a satellite network in a way that maximizes traffic flow for all users.  It acts as a squad of virtual “traffic cops”, directing a network’s data traffic in a way that maximizes the traffic flow for all users.  Competing network management solutions use a single traffic cop for directing traffic at all intersections; SCAN stations a traffic cop at each intersection (remote site), and each cop knows what the other cops are doing, so the data flow is controlled locally but is coordinated with other intersections such that traffic flows more smoothly across the entire network. 

Technically speaking, it is an automated on-demand bandwidth management system that utilizes local spectral analysis at each network node to determine availability of bandwidth for set-up of point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless carriers. Spectral analysis is employed at all of the network sites (or access terminals) to track carrier activity in a pre-determined segment of bandwidth. Each site in a SCAN network independently monitors carrier activity and, using the spectral activity data, automatically and autonomously makes decisions on when and where to transmit carriers and which receive carriers to acquire.

SCAN takes a unique approach to bandwidth management and actually fits some bandwidth-on-demand applications better than incumbent bandwidth management technologies, such as TDMA and DAMA.

In fact, SCAN combines characteristics of channel-based and packet-based bandwidth access techniques. It has the advantages of both without the limitations typically associated with using one or the other. SCAN uses a carrier sensing methodology in a frequency domain that can detects and resolves collisions.
